I have installed Thunderbird on a new computer and many (almost all) of the incoming messages have "[span]" added to the subject line. What do I set or change to remove the notice?

You need to look elsewhere. Thunderbird does not use the word Spam or change subject line. Check with your email provider and their spam filters or your antivirus software.

I think I found the source of the problem -- my anti-virus/security program's Web and Email protection.
