I need to stop pop-up biff-like notifications. Some solutions are around including Mozilla help but none seems to be valid for my version which is 24.2.0 for linux. There seems to be nothing like "General options". Thanks.

I had to click the Chinese Heaven trigram (three horizontal lines). This gave me several options, one of them being Preferences. These Preferences gave me second order options, one of them being Preferences again. These 2-nd Preferences are clickable a they solve present problem. Sorry for my ignorance :-)

In newer Thunderbird versions the menu is hidden by default, only the trigram you describe (called the Application Menu butto) is permanently visible.

You can get the menu to show by pressing F10. From there you can get to Edit -> Preferences. I like the old style menu better then the button. You can also choose to always show the menu by pressing F10 -> View -> Toolbars -> Menu Bar...
