How do I delete messages in my inbox. What is the profile folder
Messages in my inbox have a big red cross on them when I delete each one but it does not actually delete the message. In the instructions of how to solve this problem it starts off by saying open a profile folder or something. FINE... if I know what they are talking about!! Please explain how to simply delete messages in my inbox> Please do not assume I know anything so please make the instructions simple. Thank You. Terry Craig

It must be an IMAP thing because there is no such option under Account Settings-Server Settings on my POP accounts.
Glad you got it sorted out.

Compact the folder to remove deleted messages. Deleting messages just marks for deletion and usually hides the message. I have never seen the red x before.
Read about compacting here. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders
Thanks for trying to help Airmail but what you said had no bearing on what I was trying to do. I simply wanted to delete a message when I pressed Delete. When I did this, the message was crossed out and a red cross was entered at the beginning of the message but it was not deleted. I finally found the problem which was in the Server Settings. I had set the server settings as "just mark as deleted" instead of "move to this folder". I then entered the trash folder as all was fixed. Hope this helps someone else. Terry
Like I said I have never seen the red x routine. I do not see any setting like this in my server settings. I wonder if this is an IMAP thing since I only have POP accounts. Are you using IMAP? Where in server settings do you see this option? You do realize that you will still have to compact the folder to actually delete the message and clear the disk space.
Open Account settings then Server settings and you will see the options I was refering to. I have not had to compact any folders to delete the messages. In fact I would not know how to compact a folder!! Regards, Terry
I'm using Windows 8.1 with IMAP settings.
