Why do Mozilla not seem to be solving the problem with TB not working with Win 8.1? Can't see any response from Moz. What is going on?

In common with many others, I've been a Mozilla supporter for years and years. Heck, I even bought one of your T-Shirts to add support! And I've used TB on my laptop for ages. Then along came Windows 8.1 and bingo - TB crashed instantly and I can't get it to work. I haven't seen any responses from Mozilla themselves to address this. None of the 'solutions' involving Safe Mode, disabling AV etc have any effect.

Have Mozilla really just given up? And how come they can't even respond to the zillion people asking the question?

Am I really going to have to spend £220 to get MS (Arghh) Office so I can run Outlook?

Come on Mozilla, support your fans who support you!!!

Thunderbird works on OS Windows 8. However, you must run it from the desktop, it will not run as an app. http://www.eightforums.com/browsers-mail/10818-thunderbird-email-program.html

Not sure where you downloaded TB from, but this is the link: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all.html

I have seen people reporting that they experience various problems after upgrading from Win8 to Win8.1, but others are ok.

re:None of the 'solutions' involving Safe Mode, disabling AV etc have any effect. Sorry, but that statement is not specific enough. There are specific steps to take and as you have not listed them, it is unknown exactly what you have tried or not.

Test 1. Startup Windows 8.1 in Safe Mode with networking enabled and then

  • Start Thunderbird in Safe mode

Start Thunderbird in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while starting the application. So both computer and Thunderbird are using a Safe mode.

Does problem go away - please state if there is a problem when both computer and Thunderbird were started in safe mode.? Describe the issue.

If no: problem likely to be a bug in Thunderbird or in your Thunderbird profile, or your mail provider.

If yes, then perform: Test 2. (still in Windows safe mode with networking enabled) ... start Thunderbird normally

If problem is still gone, then cause is a program loaded during windows startup. Possibilities include: antivirus SW, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates

did test 2 work ok?

If problem is NOT gone - it has come back, then cause is likely a Thunderbird addon - eliminate them by disabling each one at a time in Tools | addons | extensions and restarting
