My address book in v. 32.0 will not sort properly e.g. by first, last, etc.; how can I correct this?
My address book has 106 names. I have selected for an ascending-sort by display name. But it will not fully sort that way; instead, the names appear as batches, within each of which the sort is (mostly) correct. When I click on Name at the top, the sort toggles between ascending and descending, as expected, but the change occurs within each of the seeming batches rather than overall. Also, it seems that in 1 or more batch, the name displayed is not what I have chosen, e.g. first, last or display.
In other words, displayed is one long list of names but it's really sets of names, that are treated as such. I want them all to be in one "set" and correctly sortable as such.

As I understand it, add-ons include several different ways to add functionality to Thunderbird. They are Extensions, Themes and Plugins. So, you could say Lightning is an extension part of a wider selection of add-ons.

Are you using Thunderbird 32.0b1? or which build of TB 32.0?
Well, it appears that Matt (hello there...) has deleted all the replies including (properly) my unintended superfluous ones.
So to answer Fabian Rodrigues, my v. of TB is just 32.0.
I have to say that this is the most oddly-configured dialog system I've yet come across.
Anyone have an answer to my query?
Version 32.0 hasn't been released yet (not as stable, at least), I believe you're using a beta version. I just wanted to make sure, unfortunately I can't help with this version, hopefuly someone else can pick it up from here.
Yes, the "About" panel does state that I am on the "beta update channel". I should have noted that. So how can I get "off" that channel and go back to whatever is the current non-beta version, at least for now?

Close Thunderbird. Uninstall Thunderbird. Then reinstall a download for your OS and prefered language from here:
To sort contacts in an Address Book: open Address Book View > show name as > 'Last, first' This lists all names by surname
View > Sort By > select 'Name' and 'Ascending' This will sort the Name column by Name Ascending will put A to Z with A (surname) at the top.
Sorting did not work in v. 32.0b. I've gone back to 31.0 and now the sort is correct. I note that I had to also go back to the previous v. of Lightning, suitable for TB's v. 31.0.
And BTW, Lightning (& perhaps others or all others) is called an add-on on the Website and when downloaded but it is characterized as an extension when it comes time to enable or configure it. To me, that is confusing. Why not just use one common term?

I also have this problem sorting my address book which did not occur until I updated to Version 32.0. I will go back to version 31 but v32 needs to have someone look at the sort module and make corrections.
Version 32 is beta software. If you do not what to have issues, do not use beta software. That is why they do beta testing. There is a beta site if you really want to be a beta tester. This is not the place to complain about problems with beta software. Version 31 is the latest general release. If you have issues with a general release, then ask about them here.
uninstall v32 Download and reinstall 31.0 from here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all.html

Please could you help by reporting this as a bug, so that the developers are aware of it. They would need to know what OS you use and version of Thunderbird. Explain what you do and what results you are seeing and what you expected to see. Report bugs at the link below, you would need to register to logon:
Toad-Hall, thank you for your civil response (in contradistinction to others). I'll do that.
