Deleted Emails still showing in Searches (from years ago even), blank emails coming in and filters not auto running. *sigh*

Two problems here, maybe they are related. I have gone through and deleted to rebuild the database as other say to do and more for quite a while. I am perplexed.

Now I do receive a ton of emails and have trouble going through all them and need to save a large group of them for my review blog. However I have also created subfolders (which btw the filters I set up won't auto filter either)

I goofed up terribly I guess setting up the emails or something, here is what I have going on.

First my biggest problem, emails show in list when they arrive (and it may be a whole bunch with the same date and time) that show sender and date. When I go to open these emails they are blank. I don't think it shows subject matter, I don't have it happening today... if I log back into email these emails don't have sender, subject but all seem to have the same date and time, and of course the emails are empty.

Annoying problem: my searches through my emails will show old deleted emails subject and senders with the dates and summery. But of course they are deleted so no content. I would rather all these old emails go bye bye altogether.

3rd, my filters don't auto filter, I must have set this (new to me) option up wrong. I do go in and manually have it filter.

I am sorry I waited so long to write and problems have built up. I am a newbie with all of this, so please be gentle and detailed with me. I usually figure out these things myself reading solutions, but all the solutions I have found were only for the First problem (above) and seems to help for a little while, then boom it acts up again with blank emails, which seem to be totally lost.

Maybe you can guide me to keeping my emails (Imap) online on the server and only read, write and delete from Thunderbird? I am so lost and frustrated. thank you.

Sorry I let this get so out of hand here, Mariah

What your describing sounds lot like Nortons anti virus, but other do it to.

Multiple copies of the same email over and over are almost always anti virus incoming mail scanning. Turn off scanning and the problem goes away turn it back on and it resumes.

My guess is that your filter issues, and search problems are also related to this uniquitous and most ignored security tool that messes up far more than it should..

Deleting the index I assume you mean the global-messages-db.sqlite. if you don't close Thunderbird and delete it now. Searches will be incomplete until it rebuilds and the time to do that will have a lot to do with how much mail there is and how busy the computer is.

Now create an exclusion in your anti virus program for the Thunderbird profile folders. My guess is it is trying to scan the files in your profile every time Thunderbird tries to open them and generally turning things into a tug of war, which Thunderbird looses as it just does not wait around if files are locked. It expects exclusive access to it's files immediately, not in 10 minutes when the anti virus has done it's thing. So things get added to the index but not removed. Mails don't move as the destination or source file is "in use" etc.

I did accidentally hit the resolved button in the email... ah well.

I just read your post, thank you so much for your help. I will work on resolving the issues with your advice, thank you. I am using Avast for my anti-virus... I will go through that and see about turning off the email scan.

Thank you so much for your advice with this mess here... I have been pulling my hair out trying to resolve this alone. Sometimes it helps not to be as bull headed as I am thinking I can find the answers all by my lonely.

Thanks Again, Mariah

thank you the solution worked, I shut off Avasts email anti-virus and the problems with missing emails hasn't shown it's ugly head again.

I haven't noticed if old deleted emails are showing up from years ago or not, I take it that I just rebuild the global-messages-db.sqlite again and perhaps that will be resolved? Either way the biggest problem is taken care of and if the old messages show up in searches I will rebuild the above.
