I am attacked by malicious sw that install programs on my computer. They use a html-file named Background for Firefox to produce advertisment banners in Firefox.

How can I block it in Firefox?

Is it an add-on, or a settings change?

As a starting point, try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or if possible, remove).

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that change the ads you see?

Thanks for the answer.

I don't know if it is an adds-on or something else. The program they install only includes some dll-files and a html-file called Background for Firefox. There are no executable files (exe).

The effect on Firefox is big banners advertising this or that.

I have checked Adds-on/Extensions but there is nothing that I don't already know what it is.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
