All my mail from March 4 to date has just disapeared from my in box. How? why?

this happened about a week ago. between trash and "all mail" I can find almost everything, but it is very time consuming and should not be necessary. Now, it happened again today. all my messages from 3/4 to date have disappeared from the in box? What is going on? How can I: 1. keep this from happening; 2. recover my inbox?
