Spellchecker uses Great Britain spelling

Ubuntu 12.04, Firefox 29.0 that comes with it. Spellchecker (at least in facebook comments on a newspaper site) wants to "correct" me to use English spelling ("colour" vs. "color") I went to about:config and changed spellchecker.dictionary from en_GB to en_US but A) I'm still being prompted for English spelling, and B) at least once this setting has reset itself back to en_GB

How do I make my Firefox stick with US spelling as the default?

This article outlines how to select spellcheck dictionary preferences without about:config.

If you don't want Firefox to autocorrect for you, and have Ubuntu do it instead, here's how:

  • Open Firefox
  • Click "Hotdog menu" in right corner
  • Select "Preferences"
  • Select "Advanced" tab

There you will see a browsing option where you can set your preference on autocorrect.

If you want to your system to handle autocorrect instead of Firefox, deselect this option.

This can be caused by the presence and usage of installed Hunspell dictionaries (/usr/share/hunspell/) that have a different naming convention than what Firefox uses (an underscore instead of an hyphen).
