How to display the address book list to left of inbox
It used to be there but was deleted in that position by clicking the 'X' at the top of the address book window. Now cannot get it back

Yes, it should have been F9. I didn't check. :-(
But it's still there in the menu and you could still add a toolbar button. Take control.

Thunderbird's Address Book is not normally shown in the main window adjacent to the "Inbox". It can be added, in a new pane below the list of accounts, by an add-on.

I don't know if it is actively being maintained. On reviewer seems to think it's not compatible with current TB 24.5.0.
Can you tell me why you want an address book in sight all the time?
There is another Contacts Sidebar which appears in the Write window which you use when you are composing a message. (And that seems to me to be a much more approriate place for an address book.) You weren't looking for this one were you? F7 in the Write window will toggle it off and on. Or View|Contacts Sidebar in the menu. And you can add a toolbar button to hide/reveal it.
No menus or toolbars?

The answer said to use Write and F7.
It didn't work for me, but someone else said use Write and F9. That worked. Gordon

Modified
You are quite right. It was in the send panel I wanted it, and not in my email arriving panel.
Many thanks, problem solved. Gordon
