Firefox lets you display menus, notifications, messages and other parts of the Firefox interface in different languages.

Tip: To choose a language for displaying web pages, see Choose display languages for multilingual web pages.
Note: If you don't see the Language section under Settings > General, or can't add new languages, make sure:
  • You're using the latest version of Firefox.
  • You're connected to the internet.
  • You're using Firefox (not Firefox Nightly or Developer Edition – see special instructions below).

Switch Firefox to another language

You can switch languages at any time to display Firefox menus, notifications, and messages in a different language.

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Settings (select Preferences on older macOS versions).Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. If you can't read the language Firefox is currently using, look for the gear icon to open Settings, then scroll to a section with a dropdown menu and language names.
  3. In the Language section of the General panel, choose a language in the drop-down menu.
  4. Restart Firefox.
Note: If you are using Firefox Developer Edition or Firefox Nightly, you will need to download a new copy in the language you wish to use from the Firefox website. See the last section below for further instruction.

Add languages to the Firefox interface

Follow these steps to add more languages to Firefox.

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Settings (select Preferences on older macOS versions).Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. In the Language section of the General panel, click Search for more languages in the drop-down menu.
  3. Click Select more languages to add and choose the languages you want to add, then click the Add button.
  4. Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to change the order, or Remove to pull a language out from the list.
  5. Click OK to save your changes.
Firefox will display the first language as your default and will display alternate languages if necessary in the order they appear.

Set an order of preference for languages

If a Firefox feature is not available in your top language, Firefox will display your next preferred language.

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and select Settings (select Preferences on older macOS versions).Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. In the Language section of the General panel, click Set Alternatives to open the Firefox Language Settings window.
  3. Select a language and use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to change the order, or Remove to pull a language out from the list.

Change language in Firefox Nightly or Developer Edition

Firefox Nightly and Developer Edition do not support changing the interface language through Settings. To use a different language:

  1. Go to the Firefox download page.
  2. Choose your version and preferred language.
  3. Download and install that version manually.

Website translation behavior

If websites are showing in the wrong language, it may be due to the website’s behavior itself. Some websites may use your IP address, system settings, or Google Translate to display content in a local language, even if Firefox is set to English.

To fix this:

  • Check your Firefox language preference under Settings > General > Language.
  • Clear cookies for the affected website (Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Data).
  • Turn off Google Translate extensions or browser features that auto-translate content.
Note: Not all regional language variants are available in Firefox. If your preferred version is missing, try selecting the base language (e.g., English) or check the language packs page.
