NOTE: Thunderbird Pro is currently in its Early Bird release and available by invitation only. To learn more and join the waitlist, visit our website. We’ll be opening Thunderbird Pro to the public once the Early Bird release concludes.
Here’s how to get started with Mozilla’s Thundermail service.

Configure Thundermail in Thunderbird for Android

Automatic Setup for Thunderbird 18 or newer

NOTE: Thunderbird Pro requires Thunderbird for Android version 18 or newer (also K-9). We recommend using the latest monthly release version documented in New in Thunderbird for Android.
  1. Thunderbird app menu > Settings gear icon gear icon > Add account.
  2. Enter your Thundermail email address. For example nemo@thundermail.com.
  3. Click Next.
  4. The next screen will prompt you to Please specify the special folders for your account, and offer some suggested settings for your Thunderbird special folders. For most people, the defaults are fine. Configure them to your needs and click Next.
  5. On the next screen, configure your user name under Your name and optionally your signature and click Next.
  6. The next screen has sync and notification options. For most people, the defaults are fine. Configure them to your needs and click Next .

QR Code Setup for Thunderbird 19 or newer

This is faster because you don't have to type your Thundermail email address.
Please ensure Thunderbird is allowed to use the camera in Android settings in order to make QR code scanning work.
  1. Display the Thundermail QR code: https://accounts.tb.pro/mail and click on Mobile.
  2. Tap > tap the gear icon:gear icon > tap Import settings > tap Scan QR code > point your camera at the QR code from the previous step.
  3. Follow the prompts to add your Thundermail email account to Thunderbird for Android just like Automatic Setup above.

Manual Settings

Thunderbird should automatically configure your Thundermail email settings to match your TB Pro accounts page. If it doesn’t, please manually change the receiving email and sending email settings according to the sections below. If manual setup fails, please create a support ticket using our form at: https://support.tb.pro/hc/en-us/requests/new.

Configure Catch-All, Thundermail, tb.pro, and Custom Domain Aliases for use with Thunderbird

Set up a Thunderbird identity for each each alias you want to reply from

The steps are the same for catch-All, tb.pro, Thundermail and custom domain aliases, so we will just use the term alias to refer to all of these types of aliases in the instructions below:

You will have to setup an identity in Thunderbird for every alias you want to send email from.

For example, if your catch-all is for glamroc.com and you would like to reply as alice@glamroc.com and slade@glamroc.com in addition to the default alias for glamroc.com, you will have to setup identities for both alice@glamroc.com and slade@glamroc.com.

Here's how:

  1. Thunderbird app menu > Settings gear icon gear icon.
  2. Tap on your account, e.g. roc@glamcroc.com > Sending mail.
  3. Tap Manage identities > (also known as the kebab menu because the three vertical dots evoke a kebab) > New identity.
  4. Enter the desired alias in the Email address field e.g. alice@glamroc.com. All other fields are optional, but we recommend you enter a memorable shorter name in the Your name field.
  5. Save the identity by tapping SAVE. When replying, you can now change the From field to this identity by tapping on it.

Send email with the identities for your aliases

  1. When composing or replying, tap on the email address in the From field.
  2. Tap on the relevant identity for the alias you wish to send from.
  3. Write and send the email as usual.

Have some fun now that email setup is done!

Congratulations, you have done successfully setup Thundermail with Thunderbird for Android! Next:
