Thank you for your question about searching the web from the default New Tab page in Firefox.

The handoffToAwesomebar preference you had set was not a standard setting. As part of forthcoming work to improve the New Tab search experience, it was removed in Firefox version 148 since it was understood that it was only being used by a small part of the user population. However, due to feedback, it will be restored in an upcoming version of Firefox (see this bug report for details).
