Thank you for your question about searching the web from the default New Tab page in Firefox.

The handoffToAwesomebar preference you had set was not a standard setting. As part of forthcoming work to improve the New Tab search experience, it was removed in Firefox version 148 since it was understood that it was only being used by a small part of the user population. However, due to feedback, it was restored in Firefox version 148.0.2 released March 10, 2026.
