Contributor Policy - Usage of Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT)

As the world moves towards embracing generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, it’s important for us to establish clear guidelines and policies pertaining to the use of generative AI in our community.

We have been listening for the past few months to conversations in the community about the use of generative AI. Based on the feedback that we received, we have made the following decisions to strengthen the integrity of our content in the Mozilla environment.

How you can use generative AI tools in our platform

While we encourage community members to be authentic, we’d also like to make room to adapt and experiment by embracing new technologies. If you wish to use generative AI content to post or interact in the community, you must abide by the following rules:

  • Accountability
    • Make sure that you have the right, under the tool’s Terms of Service, to post any output you submit.
    • Take personal responsibility for what you post.
  • Authenticity
    • Do not just copy-paste responses directly from the AI tools. Be authentic and use your own voice.
    • Take time to validate the responses that you receive from the AI tools.
  • False authority
    • Do not excessively post copied answers to inflate your community reputation.
    • Avoid using an authoritative tone that may lead community members to give a false impression of product expertise or authority.
  • Transparency
    • If a significant portion of your content is generated by AI, please provide attribution and make it clear that your responses are AI-generated.

Consequences for violating our guidelines

Failure to adhere to the above guidelines may result in the following consequences:

  • If there's strong evidence that a person is using answers from generative AI tools to provide false information, a moderator can mark their content as spam, and they will be given a clear warning through Private Message.
  • If a person has given warnings two times and doesn't change, a moderator can deactivate their profile.
  • If a person publishes too many posts in one go in a relatively short time and most of their replies contain misguided information, a moderator can deactivate their profile without prior warning.

How to report a violation

If there's an indication that a person is using answers from generative AI tools without following our policy, please report the answer for moderation by following these steps:

  1. Click on the three dots menu in the top-right corner of a comment
  2. Choose Report Abuse and a prompt will appear.
  3. Choose Others and specify the reason you think the answer is violating our forum policy in the text field.
  4. Click Submit.

This policy aims to provide a guardrail to ensure the proper use of generative AI within our community. Accountability, authenticity, transparency, and commitment to our Community Participation Guidelines should be the core of any interaction. By collective understanding and adherence to this policy, you’re helping Mozilla to maintain an inclusive space where everybody feels empowered to contribute. Thank you for being a vital part of our community, and let’s navigate this exciting phase of modern technology together!
