Is there a way to reduce the amount of wasted white space in headers?

I find the headers annoying. While it displays the information I want to see, it wastes a great deal of real estate in the form of excessive white space between the lines.

I would also like to know if there is a way to remove the buttons since they are already in the top of my program and I don't need it in 2 places.

there is an addon, compact headers, that helps a little.
