Firefox for iOS articles - L10N

  1. Hi, everyone. To get the ball rolling, we have ~15 short Firefox for iOS articles headed to your L10N dashboard. These are written with mobile in mind, so I've kept the word count to a minimum. A few of these have hidden placeholders for screenshots, and while the screenshots do make the article nicer, the instructions aren't dependent on them. We're not imposing a hard deadline for this. Just do what you can. * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-or-remove-search-engines-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-add-and-remove-bookmark-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-your-default-search-engine-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/clear-browsing-history-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-open-and-close-tabs-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/view-web-pages-reader-view-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-web-pages-your-reading-list-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/uninstall-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-your-ipad-iphone-or-ipod * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-tabs-firefox-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-the-tab-list-view-in-firefox-for-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-version-firefox-do-i-have-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sync-your-bookmarks-tabs-and-history-ios * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/navigation-bar-firefox-ios

  4. In fact Czech is ready from August 14, but I was ashamed to boast. If anyone is still hesitant whether to start, the articles are really short and simple. ;)

  5. Wow, great job, Michal. You rock!

Here's an update: since Firefox for iOS won't be released to all countries at once, we'll need to add the [[Template:ioscoming]] template to all the Firefox for iOS articles.

The template will let users know that Firefox for iOS is coming and link to a list of countries.

Thank you for your patience and hard work!

  6. What's the likely dates or Releases for the different Locales ?

I imagine it may help l10n prioritising work if they have some idea when this will need to be finished for their own locale.

  7. John, while I really want to share the dates, I'm not at liberty to share them here. All I can say is "very, very soon".

If you're under NDA, please message me privately.

Hi Michal! (feels a bit like writing to myself ;D)

Can you PM me or send me an email with your postal address? I will ask Madalina to send you something cool for your great effort :-) Thanks!

  9. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I guessed I may get that sort of response. No I am not under NDA not many volunteers will be!

Joni, Don't you think current methods of working are putting undue pressure on volunteers. I know this is only one instance, but this is part of a pattern. It has become a policy change.

My thoughts here are that we do have an official policy of trying to give l10n 4 weeks notice of change. We are repeatedly failing to do that. I worry that is possibly putting some locales and localisers under undue pressure. Article editors and reviewers, are in a similar position.

Also in trying to cope with with work at short notice those articles or other articles will not be localised by the time they are needed, because scheduling & planning work and workloads becomes impossible.

    • Is there a danger we are going to overload locales with work and potentially lose localisers ?

Maybe I am wrong and localisers are all used to volunteering for high pressure work; and enjoy the stress of short deadlines and hazy information due to NDA issues and hidden bugs. Any localisers wish to comment ?

    • Are you happy to have articles needing localising at short, or no notice ?
Or would it help if we stuck to the existing official policy * of trying to give 4 weeks notice wherever possible ?

I know I do not like the way we seem to have to try to work now.

  10. Thank you everyone. :)

John99: I would like very much to comment, but I cannot, as I am translating mostly products and websites, not SUMO.

Joni: Even without NDA, would it be possible to just let the l10n teams know something like "FxiOS will ship in about 3-4 weeks and you locale is/is not going to be shipped in this wave"?

  11. John, I commented on the 4 week policy in another thread. Vesper and I will figure out a new L10N timeline that's reasonable for all teams involved.

While we can certainly get an article up within 4 weeks of release, we can't always guarantee that there'll be no changes to these articles, especially since a lot of them have dependencies on other teams. Unfortunately, we've had to work with the circumstances that we've been given. We do tell the product teams that we can't guarantee localization if we don't have at least a 2-week lead time.

What I can try to do is to list all the upcoming features in this spreadsheet, but I can't finalize all revisions 4+ weeks before a feature is released.

  12. just to be clear, if it was up to me, we would be a lot more transparent with all NOT just NDA'ed folks

  13. Hey everyone,

We are officially live with the articles, as per Joni's announcement here.

L10ns, all content for iOS is fair game for localization now - go for it and let me know if you need any help.

    Cheers,

    Michał
