Recommending ESR for compatibility reasons

  1. 2nd Edit please do not recommend ESR see Michael's summary /forums/contributors/708309#post-46274

tl/dr We are already [3] sometimes recommending ESR to apparent ordinary users, is that ok and what do contributors refer to on this issue.

I have not tried to look up cross references but clearly ESR was not developed to deal with ordinary users having compatibility issues. I seem to recall statements specifically saying something similar and/or that it was to be discouraged, or was a none goal.

Clearly there will be grey areas and judgment calls to be made. We have already discussed [2] and decided it is ok to link to older versions on the ftp server in some cases as long as the user is warned of the consequences. I in fact prefer to PM the link to individual users.

I doubt a KB article will be written on this topic, but maybe something could be added to the KB article about previous versions. However like the previous versions and ftp discussion this forum seems a good place for contributor information.

I do actually see from a user point of view a clear advantage of using ESR over ordinary old versions, it will receive at least some updates, and it will remain secure.

There are already cases where the current release Firefox 11 has incompatibilities that ESR may not have. This is going to increase and as legacy OS support is dropped [1]. I foresee recommendation of ESR will be a widespread solution a least outside this forum.

  2. It seems that the KB policy has changed (do what you want even if you are not aware of what you do despite the warning - some users think that a good antivirus is enough to avoid security issues) because Install an older version of Firefox has now a link to the release server.

For the ESR recommendation, I've already asked it for organizations in this thread and that thread. A link to the FAQ about ESR should filter some people.

  3. ESR is not for individual users and I haven't seen any budging on the subject.

ESR is ''not'' for individual users and I haven't seen any budging on the subject.
  4. We shouldn't recommend the ESR for individuals. That is beyond the scope of that project. When I updated Install an older version of Firefox I decided to try adding a link to the release server because people will look for this anyway. If you search google you will find sketchy looking sites that host their own versions.
