There is a discussion here that is against any kind of censorship. A moderator must add a warning about safety vulnerabilities like the one proposed here.

Well I agree about censorship issues, but I was always under the belief that the ftp severs should be protected. I guess censorship supersedes this.
The links were a little confusing, Links to ftp will not be edited out then.

I am also up for Removing/Hiding the FTP link from random users, as i mentioned in another thread https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forums/contributors/707522?last=42075&page=2#post-41986
Now as scoobidiver said in that same thread https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forums/contributors/707522?last=42075#post-41943
So for Testing purposes, a Username & Password Login page setup is most appropriate. Each of the Old and New Testers need to be assigned an individual Username & Password. After Logging-in, a Tester can have access to the FTP link.
I know that this involves quite a bit of work for the Developers but (in my opinion) this can be the only solution for limiting random users from accessing the FTP link.

Like I said in th other thread, mirroring is not really an issue with old releases, since very few people will download them. It's only relevant to new releases, because there are usually way over a million downloads per day for the latest version at any given time.

I don't think we want to limit random users, but I don't think our users ever need the ftp, I think we should edit the links to the http releases link. Now that we have Aurora, we don't ever need to link our users to latest nightly either.

Yeah like that will last as all it will take is for some usernames and passwords to be leaked in public. And if you only restrict it to Mozilla people, mirrors people and select people then that may be too restricting.

Again: It is *not* an issue to send people to the FTP server. Mozilla's servers can handle a crazy amount of traffic. It is only during releases that we need to be careful, because there might be north of 4 million people downloading Firefox in a single day. So, I don't think we need to take any action to hide FTP links.

Do you mean Mbrubeck? He is a Mozilla employee. And please read the post before yours. It really is not a problem to link to the FTP server.

Just for the record, links directly to releases.mozilla.org OR ftp.mozilla.org do NOT count in our official download counts and bypass our mirrors. This is the main reason we don't usually suggest it because if lots of users are getting Firefox 3.6 (or somesuch) directly from those places, we don't see that and we remain unaware that there's a problem.
Usually, linking from SUMO isn't a big deal because we don't drive that much traffic and being a few hundred off either way doesn't matter. If a thread is popular, though, we should consider using different links.

It is now settled that providing FTP link to users is Unnecessary & an Irresponsible behavior.

- For problems appearing after a Firefox update, try first to solve the issue. In case there are no solutions, provide a link to the last version still maintained. If the user insists to have the previous version, add a warning below the link stating that the version is insecure and can potentially compromise the confidentiality, integrity or availability of personal information.
... and this is from a Sept 10, 2011 post by KadirTopal in /forums/contributors/707640#post-42495 Contributors posting links to ftp server for old versions
Quote:
I don't do this often, but please read the following as a message from an administrator aka person making the final call, because I really want to put this FTP thing behind me: Linking to the FTP server is not against any rules, if it were a problem we would put it behind a login or secure it somehow. Linking to unsupported versions is discouraged. Do it only when there is no other way and make sure to point out that people put themselves at risk. If you see a post where that warning is missing, edit the post if you are a moderator and send them a PM about it. You can also add a warning as a reply if you are not a moderator.
In case it helps, this MozillaZine article contains additional information for people considering a downgrade to an old Firefox version that is no longer being maintained:
