I want media files to play in external apps. media.windows-media-foundation.enabled has no effect for me.
So ridiculous that something like this changes out of the blue. I run a recording studio. This is how I make money to eat. I have always been able to click an mp3/wav/etc and choose to save or open with an external player. I have to do this a lot. The only way I seem to be able to do it now is to save it somewhere and then open it from there. Thanks. Twice the work. media.windows-media-foundation.enabled = whatever has zero effect for me. I'd like to say what I really think, but I'll bite my tongue.
Edit: Are you kidding me? It's asking to install software to be able to post this question? Still biting my tongue...
Chosen solution
Try to set the media.directshow.enabled pref to false.

"Support for MP3 decoding on Windows XP, completing MP3 support across Windows OS versions" was one of the headline feature of the Firefox 26 upgrade. But unlike the old days, the release notes aren't prominently advertised when you get the "you are up-to-date" page so you probably came to the most logical place to find that out.
Anyway, cor-el has your answer (Media Foundation is only relevant on Vista and higher).
