Does Office 2010 Starter still work normally if you download the file and save it to a local folder first, before opening it?

Does Office 2010 Starter still work normally when you download from Internet Explorer?

If both of those are true, it sounds as though Firefox is attempting to open the file using the "wrong" Microsoft Office program(s) -- stub or Office 2013 trial edition instead of the Starter edition.

It wont let me download and save. it goes directly to Microsoft Office 2013 trial.

Internet explorer does the same thing.

Can I change firefox and internet explorer from opening office 2013 and get back to my original starter edition?

You can try changing your application preferences to "always ask" and change your download directory to "always ask me where to save files" to gain more control.

Note: The help steps for Windows assume you are using using the compact two-column menu (orange Firefox button) instead of the classic menu bar. If you use the menu bar, the Options dialog is on the Tools menu.

Upon further review, this may be a Windows/Office issue.

When you install a second version of Office, it will register itself as the default application for the same file extensions as the earlier version of Office.

You can use a special "startup switch" to have Office 2010 re-register itself as the program to handle those file extensions. In Windows 7, It might be easier to use the control panel to change the file associations.

(1) Special /regserver Shortcut

Close all Office application windows.

Open Windows Explorer (e.g., WindowsKey+E) and drill down to your Office 14 folder, which typically would be here in a paid version:

64-bit Win: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14
32-bit Win: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

Right-click WINWORD.EXE and choose Create Shortcut which Windows will save on the Desktop

Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and edit the Target line by adding a space and then /regserver then click OK

This shortcut, when run, will update the Office settings in the registry and then launch Word. Since this adds several seconds to the process, you probably want to use this shortcut only when needed. You may want to give it a special name.

(2) Windows 7 Control Panel

Open Control Panel from the Start menu, Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type...

This method allows you to modify file extensions individually as needed.

Do either of those approach work for you? Note that you might need to exit and restart Firefox before it will re-read those associations from the registry.

I just saw your 9:46 post. I think your right. I can find folder 14 but then it goes nowhere. As my other post, I will wait until tomorrow to try and have Dell deal with it. I will save your instructions just in case I need to do it myself. Thanks I will let you know how it all turns out
