Why no sign in on google.com/firefox?

Anytime I'm on the default Google page for Firefox (http://www.google.com/firefox) if I'm not already signed into Google, there's no option to sign in or go to Gmail. Is there any way to change this template? I usually get there by just entering a blank search in the search box included with Firefox (not Google toolbar). If the page itself can't be changed, can I change the page the search takes me to on a blank search?
