OpenKeychain s no longer actively developed, replacement?
OpenKeychain is a free and open-source Android app that implements the OpenPGP standard. It lets you manage cryptographic keys and use them to encrypt, decrypt, sign, and verify text, files, and messages so that only the intended recipients can read them and so that authenticity can be checked.
It is no longer actively developed for new features (maintenance mode with security fixes only), though a maintained hard fork called OpenKeyRing exists that continues development and adds features such as S/MIME support.

Will OpenKeyRing work as a replacement to OpenKeychain?
OpenKeyRing is a maintained hard fork of OpenKeychain (the original OpenPGP Android app, which has been in maintenance mode with no new features since around 2021). It focuses on OpenPGP and S/MIME key management for Android.
Status: Pre-alpha / early development. Things may break, and it is not recommended for full reliance yet. It is free, open-source, with no tracking, telemetry, or accounts. Source code is public at git.gay/owl/open-keyring. Direct APK downloads and releases are available; F-Droid and IzzyOnDroid support are planned. Minimum Android version is 5.0 (API 21).

We have had several discussions about encryption (GPG and S/MIME) in the app. This isn't in our roadmap for 2026, though might be something we add to 2027. For now we are prioritizing PRs that align with our 2026 roadmap.
