incognito mode storing history after exit

I've used firefox for quite awhile, recently, incognito mode stopped deleting the sites visited while it's in use. It appears that none of the settings have changed. I'm told there is a box to check if you want your history while in the mode to be erased. I do not remember ever having this before and it seems counter intuitive.
