Thunderbird "Certificate key usage inadequate"

Our self signed Exchange certificate was renewed yesterday and since then when I try to send an email, I get a message that says "Certificate key usage inadequate for attempted operation. The configuration related to [Exchange server IP address] must be corrected. " Our IT people have tried everything they can think of to make it work, but we still can't send emails." It is only Thunderbird that can't send emails. Emails are being received with no problem.
