I am a brand newbie to Thunderbird. I want to use Chat function but have no idea what clients are available or recommended. If I am correct, will this function give me the ability to send a message to someone using their telephone number?

Chat is not texting. Chat is a feature allowing use on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), a separate network community.
