Get "Sending of the message failed" when I send email, but the email sends anyway

Here's something I've never seen in more than 20 years of using Thunderbird. It's more of an aggravation than anything else, but I'm asking about it because I hope it's not a sign of something more serious:

I receive: "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again."

But the message does send. This happens mostly with my Hotmail account, but also sometimes with either of my two Gmail accounts.

This started after an update to Thunderbird; one of the v. 91 updates, I think. None of my settings changed and I've done nothing different to the Thunderbird settings in years. I'm running Thunderbird on Xubuntu 20.04, 64 bit, and the current Thunderbird is 91.9.0.

Any thoughts? And thanks for your help.

Thanks again. Sorry about that.

Actually, I think I figured this out. It apparently happens only (or at least most of the time) using the email send widget in Firefox, which routes the web page URL through Thunderbird. I also tested it with a couple of email extensions and got the same error message. So there must be something in the way Firefox works with Thunderbird.

Thanks again for your help.

It sounds like the connection is being lost before the send completes, probably because the server isnot signing off, just dropping the connection. Perhaps log the connection process and see why. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/2021/10/logging-mail-sending-in-thunderbird.html

Got this log message: NS_ERROR_FAILURE: Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIAutoCompleteInput.popup] LoginManagerChild.jsm:194 Invalid Console.maxLogLevelPref value: all 36 mailnews.smtp: error { target: TCPSocket, isTrusted: true, name: "NetworkError", message: "Network", errorCode: 2152398868, srcElement: TCPSocket, currentTarget: TCPSocket, eventPhase: 2, bubbles: false, cancelable: false, … } SmtpClient.jsm:434:17 Invalid Console.maxLogLevelPref value: all mailnews.send: Sending failed; The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again., exitCode=2153066800, originalMsgURI= MessageSend.jsm:336:27 Invalid Console.maxLogLevelPref value: all

Then, when I sent the same email again, I didn't get the error message, and the log looked like this: NS_ERROR_FAILURE: Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIAutoCompleteInput.popup] LoginManagerChild.jsm:194 Invalid Console.maxLogLevelPref value: all

the value is All not all or ALL. Case sensitive in other words.

I suggest you look in the outgoing server (SMTP) entry in account settings.

If Thunderbird is not running the default server in outgoing servers will be used. My guess is it is either left over from an obsolete account or is just out of date in some way.

If Thunderbird is open and you are have an email account selected in the folder pane, the outgoing server (SMTP) for that account will be used. On those occasions you would not see the error.

Thanks for this. The SMTP settings are correct -- I checked them when this started happening. But I'll keep messing with this.
