connection to server timed out

I have a laptop using windows 10. I have been using Thunderbird for several years but now every time I open Thunderbird to view my email the new email are not there but they are on my desktop !

When I open Thunderbird to see my new emails I get a message pop up saying connection to server mail.keith@firesafety2000.co.uk timed out. where are my emails? the old ones are still there to view but not new ones. Help would be very much appreciated. I am not pc technical so please explain in simple terms. Many thanks

How is the account set up in each device, POP or IMAP (Server Type in Account Settings)? What's the antivirus on the desktop?
