How to upgrade but make reversion to previous easy?

I should upgrade from v60 but I know I kept it for a reason - IIRC some of the addons I require stopped working; things that would correctly zoom the size of the font in the TBird windows (not stuff I type, but the size of the font used by TBird in its windows). Because otherwise the size is miniscule and I cannot read it.

So how can I avoid the upgrade "overlaying" itself and thus effectively deleting my existing rev? Can I install "new" and get an empty Profile folder, and then copy my existing profile to it? What link gives me a "new" install and not an overlay? Using Mac OSX... Can I protect my existing USER/LIBRARY/THUNDERBIRD folder by renaming it, so the New Install will create a blank one instead of overwriting mine? Then delete the new one & rename the protected one...
