How can I access compacted emails? How can I chnge my option to automatically compact?

I chose to automatically compact my Sent folder. Now I can't read the mails that were compacted. Iunderstand that deleted emails can't be retrieved, but if compacted emails cannot be viewed, then why should they be saved?
