Hi, I would like to have 2 instances of Thunderbird on my computer - so that each 1 could have a different set of email accounts - some I use infrequently and don't want them cluttering up the screen when I'm using my everyday accounts. Is this possible?

Chosen solution

What you are probably looking for is to have two or more profiles, all of which are opened by the same instance of TB, but only one at a time. Each profile can contain multiple accounts. To create and select profiles, start Profile Manager:

Winkey+R and type thunderbird.exe -p

ProfileSwitcher is useful for managing profiles.

There is also an add-on for sorting accounts in the Folder Pane to move less-used accounts to the bottom of the pane.
