I have an old version of Thunderbird and a new one, on different disks. I need to find out where the address book files are stored on the old version, so I can copy them over to the new version, but I don't know what files are involved. The import function is no help.

All your data including address books are saved in your profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data Address books have a file type of .mab. The personal book is the abook.mab. The collected book is the history.mab. Any new books that you created are named abook-1.mab, abook-2.mab etc.
