New emails in Spam folder aren't updating the folder number

I'm not sure if this is a Thunderbird or a Gmail problem. I am accessing my Gmail account using Thunderbird. I have some emails that are getting flagged as Spam and they are being sent to the Spam folder (automatically due to Gmail). My Spam folder does not update unless I click on it. Is there a setting so that the folder will update the number representing unread mail?
