Your Thunderbird profile, which is what you need to preserve, is located at:

/home/<your base folder>/.thunderbird

Copy that and you're good to go.

But in your position, I'd be backing up all of /home. Actually, I put mine on a separate drive or partition/mount point, so I can install and reinstall the OS without touching my own data.
