Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar. Turn on Always Check Firefox Default Browser.

Also press the Make Firefox Default.

If there is a problem doing this, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Separate Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Note: Windows users should download the ActiveX for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the ActiveX.

Your default browser is the one used to open URLs from other applications, such as Adobe Reader or Microsoft Office, or Windows Favorites, or shortcuts to websites on your desktop. So it's a Windows setting. If Firefox is unsuccessful making itself your default browser in Windows' settings, you can use the Windows Control Panel, "Default Programs," to make Firefox your default browser.

You can also try to redo the default browser setting and temporarily set another browser as the default browser.
