Is there a way to remove or hide events, tasks, and the today pane?

Do you use the calendar at all? If not, uninstall it. Tools|Options|Addons|Extensions, locate Lightning and remove it.

The Today pane can be removed. It has an X to close it, and ISTR that F11, or the View or Layout menu options can be used to switch it off and on.
