When I add a word attachment to an outgoing message I can not open it to check but I can open after I have sent the message

I have recently changed computers and have loaded the latest version of Thunderbird last update 45.7.0 previously there was no problem.

Strange.

Try this. Thunderbird menu: Tools: Options: Attachments section: Incoming tab (If you cannot see the Thunderbird menu, press the Alt key or F10 key on your keyboard to show the menu) See my screenshot below.

Remove any entries for Word & Excel documents (select, then press delete button on the keyboard). Then click the OK button.

Quit Thunderbird, then restart it.

Immediately start a new e-mail and attach a Word or Excel file, then double-click it. It should ask you what program to use to open the file. Choose the appropriate one.

After you have attached the file, and you then double-click it in the Thunderbird Write window, what happens?

If I attach a PDF file it will open but when I click on word & excell files nothing happens. If the message is saved as a draft the files open okay
