I've wandered thru Options but do not see any which blocks or unblocks pictures and other graphics. I'm sure there must be some well-hidden setting for this.

Chosen solution

On the toolbar > Options > Privacy. Allow remote content (images are almost always remote content.)

Thank you, mucho! I've wandered thru settings multiple times and asked the question on the net w/o an answer. Mark went straight to the answer. It would be useful if Thunderbird had a popup option as to viewing the graphics rather than an all or none setting (and ratrher hidden at that). Thanks again Mark.

It does! See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remote-content-in-messages

Sorry, Matt not Mark. But my eyesight is dimming (anyway, yhat's my excuse). I used yr previous info to allow all remote, so now i get evrything. At least that work's. Now, I'll try yr ;latest info so I can decide on an individual basis. So, thanks again!
