I am using Windows 10. Thunderbird sends and receives emails and allows me to delete emails but if I attempt anything beyond that it crashes. filing emails, detaching attachments, filing attachments etc all cause TB to crash. I attempted to download ViewAbout so that I could attach a crash report but guess what, TB crashed. Can anyone suggest any probable cause? My computer skills are probably better than most 59 yr olds but nowhere near as good as your average 19 yr old!!

Chosen solution

Thanks Wayne Based on your advice I restored my computer to a point before Sept 20 and - wadayaknow - TB is working again. Thanks. I will try and keep an eye on what updates are installed and what their effect on TB is. Thanks for your help.

A. Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird Does problem go away? Please reply to let us know results.

B. Please post your crash IDs per https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-crash-reports

Thanks. No, crashes happen whenever I try and do anything in TB other than send, receive or delete. eg file, detach attachment, save attachment etc. I will have a look at the files you suggested. I should have perhaps said that use the Chrome browser. I have uninstalled and re-installed several times to no effect.

Thunderbird not responding and a crash are two completely different things.

Are you crashing or is the program not responding? (Yes, I see one crash report. there have been 8 of them in the last 7 days)

more options

The first thing that happens is 'not responding', around 20 seconds later TB closes and posts a crash report.

This is somewhat typical that it comes in pairs- different things, but related

So you only crash when you do Help | About? Your crash https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/4b535be1-f0ea-4cf9-a011-c9a052160930#tab-details is happening in Windows' code, not Thunderbird code. Perhaps something in https://www.google.com/search?num=20&safe=off&q=%22dui70.dll%22+crash+%22explorerframe.dll%22&oq=%22dui70.dll%22+crash+%22explorerframe.dll%22&gs_l=serp.3...60206.68528.0.69227.8.7.1.0.0.0.102.527.6j1.7.0....0...1c.2.64.serp..0.5.304...0i22i30k1j33i160k1.RtmfZXDOsFY will help. Beyond that, I'm not sure what your problems might be. You might try downloading Thunderbird from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ and installing

Hi again, looked though these files but they are way beyond my competence or understanding - thanks anyway

Then here is what I suggest

1. Download Thunderbird from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ and install it. If the problem continues...

Same thing I'm afraid the only difference being with both in safe mode I did not get the 'not responding' TB just crashed after about 20 secs.

There are two potential ideas listed in https://superuser.com/questions/1011412/explorer-crashing-repeatedly-in-win-10-ver-1511-explorerframe-dll-culprit

Another at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-iewindows8_1/unable-to-add-email-attachments-to-gmail-in-ie/5a028967-05a3-4a01-ad57-e0c1e8e76ddc talks about video files on the desktop causing a problem. In your case it might not be the desktop, but whatever folder that would be opening when explorer is started.

Tried first solution no change in TB behaviour. Tried 2nd fix - sf/scannow and repaired damaged files but no difference to TB problem other than it now goes straight to crash rather than 'not responding' first. Checked start up, no video files opening on start up

FWIW, as a 59-year old you are doing fine.

Good to know the crash signatures are all the same. Bad news is I don't have a solid solution for you, except to say that all indicators point to this not being caused by Thunderbird and therefore not solveable by Thunderbird.

If https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/b82919d7-a926-441e-8cc3-6e38a2160920 is your first crash, from Sept 20, you might consider what changed on your system or in your directories in that time frame.
