I just donated to Thunderbird, but pay pal shows it as Mozilla, Why? I thought Thunderbird was being cut loose & needed $ help on its own?

I'm just a slow Third grader level computer person, even if I am a golden ager. I had the idea that Mozilla was cutting Thunderbird loose. Thunderbird would be on their own. $$$. I donated to Thunderbird's appeal, & it appears as if the $ is going to Mozilla Thunderbird. Are they separate or not?

Mozilla is divesting itself of Thunderbird. Thunderbird council is scrambling for a home and a support operation. Right now Mozilla still helps by providing this support forum and the means to collect funds for the volunteer operation that maintains thunderbird. That arrangement is likely to come to an end soon and that is the reason for the request for donations. It takes money to keep even an all volunteer operation going.

Mozilla Thunderbird and Thunderbird is the same company. Mozilla is a group that has other programs like Firefox, etc.

This is on my screen when I check into my email. It appears as if Thunderbird & Mozilla are split??? For TB to continue they need $? Are they or are they NOT part of Mozilla? Will they or will they NOT continue as part of Mozilla?

Why we need donations

You might already know that Thunderbird improvements are no longer paid for by Mozilla. Fortunately there is an active community keeping it running and developing it further. But to survive long term, the project needs funding.

Thunderbird is currently transitioning to an independent organization. Being independent, we can shape our own fate, but there is significant infrastructure that must be maintained to deliver the application to our tens of millions of users. For Thunderbird to survive and continue to evolve, we need your support and ask for your donation today. All the money donated will go directly to funding Thunderbird development and infrastructure.
