Until I updated to the latest version of Firefox for Mac (47.0.1), I could just click on the Firefox icon in my dock, and Firefox would open up, already on my personalized home page (that is, with me logged into my ISP's front page, with my correct user id and password).

Since I updated to 47.0.1, I can't find any way to make this happen. Every time I open Firefox now, it opens to my ISP's front page, but I have to enter my user id and password. It gets pretty annoying.

I'm the only one who uses this computer. Is there any way to get Firefox to remember and use my user id and password? I've already tried changing Firefox preferences to "use current pages" when opening or to use bookmark when opening, but neither one works. I still just get my ISP's log-in page, and have to type in the user id and password.

I'm using Mac OS 10.11.5 on a 2012 iMac.

Thanks for your reply, but saving a cookie for my ISP didn't help.

What did help was to go to Firefox > Preferences > Security and then click on "Remember logins for sites", then quit Firefox and log in again.

After doing this, Firefox opens to my ISP's initial screen (not my personalized screen), but at least has my user id and password already filled in, and all I have to do is click on "log in".

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • You can create a cookie "Allow" exception to keep specific cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: Exceptions

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data
  • clearing cookies will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an "Allow" exception you may want to keep

That option is enabled by default and I'm not sure why it wasn't enabled now. Either way, I'll mark your answer as the solution and move this thread off the queue.

I've found two things that might be related to the problem I described above.

First, I had cookies set to expire as soon as I closed Firefox. Second, under Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > General, I had checked the box for "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page".

I changed these preferences to keep cookies until they expire and I unchecked the "warn me" box, then logged in, closed Firefox, and re-opened it. I was taken to the exact page I wanted to be on - my ISP's front page, and already completely logged into my personal front page.

I then changed the preferences back, so that cookies expire when I close Firefox and the "warn me" box is checked again.

So far, so good. Everything is still working the way I want it to.

Thanks for your help.
