I doubt that no connection security will work on port 587 for the SMTP server. It will more than likely be starttls or ssl/tls.
I still got this same error message

I have called them and emailed the error message I get. (Not through Thunderbird)

It suggests the error is from your providers server. They should know how to fix it. Relaying usually indicates your are trying to send from an email address using another providers server or you are not using authentication. Do you have your complete email address as your username?

they are a small company about a mile from my house up north. I have been with them for a very long time and they are usually very helpful and effective.

I found it.
There were 2 servers in my outgoing settings. smtp.server etc and roaming.server etc.
Roaming was the default, but smtp was being used.
I removed smtp etc and it worked. Consistently.
