On my machine I click on a contact in the list and press the delete key. Doesn't that work on yours? If not, I suggest you open the Address Book, choose the contact you wish to remove and click the 'Delete' button at the top.

Open the Address Book, choose contact to delete, then click the 'Delete' button at the top worked for me.
