How to search across all accounts at once?

I'd like to know if there is a way to search across all messages in all accounts in Thunderbird. I've tried the one in Edit -> Find -> Search Messages, but that makes you select an account first. This is annoying because I have to try the same search across my many accounts one at a time.

Most of us have a global search built in. Top right in the main Thunderbird window. Many users complain about it, because:

  • it's hard to do precise searches
  • it has a quirky way of presenting its results. I generally hit "open email as list" and see its findings in a more familiar view.

Try ctrl+k to start it off if you can't see this search box in your Thunderbird. It's the very topmost red box in my image.

From top to bottom, the three red boxes are:

  1. global search;
  2. quickfilter (but here modified by the Expression Search add-on);
  3. traditional folder search, which you know already.
