I can find the browser for download only on Google Play, but that site sends me away to Amazon appstore, which does not have Firefox. This is an unforseen downside of the death of my Macbook...

You can install the apk files manually but note the Release and Beta channel builds will not get updates if installed this way.

Mozilla wants to put Android Firefox on the Amazon appstore as Mozilla did have Firefox 9.0 up briefly however it was found that Amazon modified and resigned the apk which caused update problems so Mozilla pulled it shortly after. Mozilla has contacted Amazon many times about modifying this policy. So far Amazon has been unwilling.

Hi

I have had a chat to the team that work on mobile Firefox variants and currently there is no full release version available for Kindle from Amazon (although potentially unstable pre release versions can be manually downloaded, installed and updated from an FTP site).

Whilst a full Release version is currently not available from Amazon, this is something that is currently under consideration for the future.
