t bird mail receipt pop up causes win 7 to hang

T bird crashes when pop up appears in lower right announcing i have new mail. Following are some of the error msgs are in error console

Correction - pop up hangs entire win 7 o/s, have to power off and reboot to revoer...

Tools menu (alt+T) > options > General and turn of the play a sound for new mail.

Does that fix it?
