This was actually quite helpful but the yellow star is behind my email address and not the email address that is the problem. How can I make the switch? Thanks again. I feel I'm getting real close to getting rid of this headache. Dave

I get email addresses in my To: line when creating an email that look like the following. I used * symbol to protect their identity but the "" and \ lines are there that are not in the persons normal email address. How did this u? I also get an error message regarding "abook.mab" error

Skip <""****.****\"@yahoo.com ">

Roger < <********"@.co***m>>

mark <""*************\"@msn.com ">

Mark <""*******\"@aol.com ">

You get the picture. Please help me get rid of these infected bogus email addresses. They appear to be set a defaults because the actual address does not get entered into the To: space when I start to type in the persons first few letters of their name. Perhaps it's that feature of the computer automatically choosing an email address with these abnormalities instead of the actual email address in my address book. Perhaps the only way around this is to uninstall or reinstall Thunderbird and loose all of my present email addresses and start over again. There has to be a less time consuming remedy to resolve this issue. Thanks Dave

Infected? Hardly. The <> are normal and separate the name from the email address. The " " are a hint that you carelessly typed an address and included spaces or other non-standard characters like maybe a \ in the address.

All suggestions for addressing come from your address books. Find the problem addresses and fix or delete them.

By default you have two address books. The personal and the collected books. Check ALL you address books. There are times that addresses like these do no show up when searching for them. If you do not find the problem addresses come back and someone can outline how to find those well hidden addresses.

You can uninstall and reinstall all you want. It will not fix anything to do with your setup or personal info. That data is stored in your profile and is separate from the program file. It will keep you busy for a little while if that is all you are after. :)

For some reason the personal address book was missing when I opened the address book probably floating in cyber space somewhere. That's when this problem started. I now have the two address books, collected and personal. The collected address book had duplicates of many emails and felt useless. So I deleted all addresses in the collected address book hoping it would remedy this issue. I have the correct addresses that were in my address book prior to this problem and I have reinstalled them one by one again in the Address Book but still get the erroneous email addresses with the quotations even though they are no where to be found in my address book. That's why I'm thinking I need to remove Thunderbird and reinstall it again and also having to manually reinstall all of my contacts once again. I hope you and feel for my frustration. I've been working with computers since 1984 and feel quite confident in my skills to work with various programs. Wowa!!!

I started on the DOS operating system. Shhhhhhh!!!! don't tell anyone.

Cheers Dave

Open a Write window and start a new message. Start typing the problem address in the TO field. When it appears accept it. Then save the message to Drafts. Open the Draft folder and make sure the message pane is turned on. Pressing F8 turns the message pane on. Select the message and in the message pane header you will see the problem address in the TO field with a gold star following it. Click on that gold star to open the contact edit dialog box. Either correct the contact or delete it.

Hi Airmail, I did as you suggested but I never got the orange star in the TO field behind the email address with the issue. I saw a green circle in front of the email address. I did some right clicking to see if an option of opening the contact edit dialog box. Can you help me out with the finding of the gold star and the contact edit dialog box? Thanks..I feel I'm getting close to getting my sanity back. Dave

You are looking for the star in the header of the message pane in the drafts folder. It IS going to have a star there. It is going to be empty or filled with color. A filled star indicates that the address exists in one of your address books. Clicking on a filled star opens an edit dialog box. Clicking an empty star adds it to your address book.

Here is what you are looking for.

The star is behind your email address because it is in your address book as mine is in the screen shot. How about posting a screen shot of what you are seeing?

Here are some pictures I will try at attach to this post. My problem is that when I type in a letter such as W, in the To: box, an email automatically shows up with the quotation marks and other erroneous symbols that are not in my personal address book. Where would I find these saved email contacts with these typo errors? My problems started when I opened my email one day andwent to my address book and the Personal Address file was gone. All that was left was the Collected Addresses that were all over the place and incomplete and in some cases unidentifiable. I also have received a abook.mab error. I hate to go too deep and delete addresses in my address book until I find the ones that are the issue. I've spent hours on this issue rebuilding my address book and still do not have all of them that were business contacts. Thanks for the help

The first image you posted sure looks like a space between gm and ail and that would account for the quote marks indicating a non-needed space in the address. Suggestions come from ALL your address books, not just the Personal book.

How do I find where these erroneous email contact addresses are stored on my computer? That email address in my present Personal Address does not have any spaces, quotations marks or forward //// slashes in them in the entire address book. When I start typing in the first few letters in the To: space, a list email contacts that begin with the first letter appear and they all have the erroneous symbols in the address. When I push enter to accept the email address, the email address turn to red letters when I move the cursor and delete the quotation mark. It's like a error flag goes up. I'll attach a picture. Any thoughts on the error of abook.mab?

Here's other examples: In my Personal Addresses: <**************@gmail.com

What appears when I copied and pasted into the TO: space Mike D*** <"<**************"@gmail.com>

Can someone tell me where the Local Address Book is located in my computer and no doubt in the C: drive. Also, can anyone tell me how to remedy a error message stating that there is a problem with the abook.mab file. It stated that the address book could not be open due to an issue in abook.mab Perhaps that file is corrupt and causing issues with my email address contacts.

Just like everything else in Thunderbird, except the actual program, it is in your Profile. Go to the help menu, click Troubleshooting Information. There is a button to show the profile folder and it's location.

Thanks, I found the file. It's sort of unnerving to go into these files and even look around for fear of a melt down. I don't know anything about writing software so have n idea what is a necessity and other stuff, junk. Where might I find email addresses that are bogus and can be removed. I'm so close to finding my problem that I can smell it.
