The previous toolbar at the very top of the screen re: bookmarks had the easiest and most convient way for me (and I'm sure MANY OTHERS) to just click, scroll, stop & click, and done! I'm at the page i have bookmarked. Not so now? and what happened to the option "bookmark this page" in the begining of the drop down box??? This is so easy. I don't need to develop folders, files , plugins, etc..... How about developing a way for people who are high tech geeks to click on something that will take THEM to all the latest stuff?

Chosen solution

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

/* move "Show All Bookmarks" to the top of the Bookmarks drop-down list */
#BMB_bookmarksPopup #BMB_bookmarksShowAll {-moz-box-ordinal-group:0}

/* move "Show All History" to the top of the History drop-down list */
#PanelUI-history > * {-moz-box-ordinal-group:3!important}
#PanelUI-history > label.panel-subview-header {-moz-box-ordinal-group:1!important}
#PanelUI-history > #PanelUI-historyMore {-moz-box-ordinal-group:2!important}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

  • Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
  • Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) userChrome.css file in this folder (the names are case sensitive)
  • Paste the code in the userChrome.css file in the editor window and make sure that the userChrome.css file starts with the default @namespace line
  • Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as userChrome.css. Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working userChrome.css.txt file

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Hi table, you can restore the classic menu bar (File, Edit, View...) using any of the following methods:

  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar, then click Menu Bar
  • right-click the "+" (new tab) button on the tab bar, then click Menu Bar
  • tap the Alt key to show the Menu Bar temporarily, then View > Toolbars > Menu Bar
  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize, on the bottom left, Show/Hide Toolbars > Menu Bar

If that wasn't what you are looking for, or if there are other features you are missing, please post back with more details.

In current Firefox releases the "Bookmark This Page" menu entry in the Bookmarks menu changes to "Edit This Bookmark" once you have bookmarked the page and the star on the Navigation Toolbar is highlighted blue.
So do not get confused by the missing "Bookmark This Page" in the Bookmarks menu and seeing "Edit This Bookmark" instead if you try to bookmarks a page that is already bookmarked.
You can make a extra copy of a bookmark by dragging the link to a folder in the bookmarks sidebar (View Bookmarks Sidebar) or by doing a copy and paste in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

  • Click the bookmark star on the Navigation Toolbar once to bookmark the current site (this will highlight the star) to bookmark the current page in the Unsorted folder
  • Click the blue highlighted star to open the "Edit This Bookmark" pop-up dialog and move the bookmark to another folder

Thank you, Cor-el for your helpful reply to my ? about 'bookmark this page' in the drop down menu of bookmarks. I get it, altho it seems I've lost a few recent bookmarked pages in drop down menu. Is it because I have soooo many and I've never bothered to move any to a designated 'folder'? If I did move some to a folder, how would I ever find them again? Would I title the folder and them would folder show in drop down menu? Table

Hi table, folders you create on the Bookmarks Menu will show up in the list. Initially, they will show at the bottom in the order added. If you prefer them to be located higher, you can drag them up the menu. If you ever sort the menu alphabetically, all folders will move up to the top before the regular bookmarks.

Hi table, You won't have "lost" any bookmarks. Because the new drop-down bookmarks menu is wider spacing, not as many are visible so you need to scroll down by hovering your mouse over the bottom of the list - where the little arrow is - you might need your glasses on ;) and similarly at the top of the list to scroll back up again.

You can create as many folders as you like and name them appropriately - even folders within folders. The top level folders will be visible in the drop down menu - you may need to scroll as before.

What I find most irritating is the absence of the "Show all Bookmarks" on this new drop down menu that existed on the old menu bar Bookmarks. cor-el didn't explain how you'd get to that without the old menu bar other than using the keyboard short cut <ctrl><shift>B which IMHO one shouldn't have to remember. As you mentioned in your original post - just click etc. I'm afraid as I've customised my FF29 significantly, I can't say whether "Show All Bookmarks" was readily available elsewhere (other than on Bookmarks on the old menu bar).

If I were you, I would restore the old Menu Bar which was one of the first things I did, as explained by jscher2000 in the 2nd post. Using "Show all Bookmarks" which opens the Bookmarks (& History) manager, otherwise known as the LIbrary is the best way of organising your bookmarks. The old Menu Bar gives a better drop down menu as well IMHO. Hope that helps.

Modified by ChrisAO

Hi ChrisAO, "Show All Bookmarks" is all the way at the bottom of the new button/drop-down menu. This is consistent with "Show All History" being at the bottom of the History menu. I'm not sure which is more logical, top or bottom, but some users have complained that they want their own bookmarks as close to the top of the menu as possible.

Regarding scrolling, thankfully you can now use the scroll wheel to whip down the menu, unlike the bad old days of waiting for it to slowly notch upwards while holding the mouse pointer over the tiny triangle. (This is on Windows; other platforms may vary.)

Thanks for the pointer jscher2000  :) As most of my least used bookmarks are at the bottom of my drop-down list, I hadn't discovered that! I guess that table may not have discovered it either as he thought he'd "lost" some bookmarks.

But having replaced it at the top with "View Bookmarks Sidebar" (a feature that I hardly ever want to use, and in any event it's on the View menu) as well as moving "Unsorted Bookmarks" from the bottom to replace "Bookmark This Page" - it doesn't exactly put one's own Bookmarks any closer to top - especially with the wider spacing that's been used!!

Whilst this "Unsorted Bookmarks" change I find useful (about the only reason I'll use the new Bookmarks button) it would have been nicer if we'd been given the ability to personalise all of it, in this so say "most customisable" (not) version yet!

/* move "Show All History" to the top of the History drop-down list */
#PanelUI-history > * {-moz-box-ordinal-group:3!important}
#PanelUI-history > label.panel-subview-header {-moz-box-ordinal-group:1!important}
#PanelUI-history > #PanelUI-historyMore {-moz-box-ordinal-group:2!important}

Hi cor-el, thanks for that. I suspect that's a bit complex for table and he might settle for the simpler solutions as explained by myself on May 24, 2014 at 10:57pm BST and/or noting where the "Show All Bookmarks" is now as pointed out by jscher2000 in the following post.

Whilst I don't need my bookmarks right at the top of the list, I'm happy with "Show All Bookmarks" and "Unsorted Bookmarks" up there, the latter being a good move, I think I'll have a go a creating a 2nd profile and have a play with the userChrome.css file in line with the code you've provided. And thanks for the kb links as well - I really should have got into all this stuff a long time ago :(
