The latest Firefox includes a new version of Sync. This article will show you how to update. Don't want to update right away? No problem, Sync will continue to work as before for now, with one exception that we'll explain.

What's different about the new sync?

Signing into the new Sync is easy to do with a Firefox Account. No more pairing codes or recovery keys. Just sign in with your email and password and you're set. The new Sync is also a great way to back up your browsing data.

How to update to the new sync

The new version of Sync only works with the latest Firefox and you can't use both the old and new Sync at the same time. So in order to create a Firefox Account and sign into the new Sync you'll have to unlink all of your current devices from the old version of Sync.

On your desktop:
Repeat these steps for all computers you have connected to Sync.

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. Select the Sync panel.
  3. In the Sync panel click Unlink This Device.
  4. Close the Settings page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

On your Android device:
Repeat these steps for all Android devices you have connected to Sync.

  1. Tap the Menu button (either at the bottom right on some devices or in the upper right of the browser) , select Settings (you may need to tap More first) and then Sync.
  2. Scroll though the list of syncing apps and tap on Firefox.
  3. Uncheck the box on the Firefox Sync screen.

Remember, all of your devices will have to be using the latest Firefox. Update Firefox on your computer and install the latest Firefox on Android.

On your desktop:

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. Select the Sync panel.
  3. Click Sign in or Create an Account and follow the on-screen steps. This will create a Firefox Account and set up Sync on your computer.

On other computers or devices
Now that you have a Firefox Account, all you have to do is sign in with your email address and password on another device and it will automatically be connected to Sync.

What if I don't want to update to the new Sync?
