Firefox 3.6.28 is the last version of Firefox that works with Mac OS X 10.4 or PowerPC processors. To keep your computer and personal information safe, we recommend that you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7 and install the latest Firefox if possible. This article covers your upgrade options.

Note: This article only applies to Mac OS X.

Intel Processors

If you have an Intel processor and Mac OS X 10.4, your best option (secure and easy) is to upgrade Mac OS X. There is some cost involved with that so we've included some other options:

Option 1: Upgrade Mac OS X

You should upgrade to the latest Mac OS X (10.6 or 10.7). This is the most secure option and will allow you to run the latest and greatest Firefox.

  1. Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 (prerequisite for upgrading to 10.7)
  2. Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7
Note: Some Intel based Macs can only update to Mac OS X 10.6.
  3. Update Firefox.

Option 2: Switch to the TenFourFox web browser

If you can't upgrade Mac OS X, you can switch to the latest version of the TenFourFox web browser. TenFourFox is PowerPC software that runs under Rosetta. For Rosetta to work, you need the version intended for G3 processors.

Note: TenFourFox does not support plugins. If you require using Flash, Java or other plugins, do not use TenFourFox. However, please note that Flash and Java for Mac OS X 10.4 have known vulnerabilities and are not receiving security updates.
Warning: Continuing to use Mac OS X 10.4 is no longer supported by Apple and poses a significant security risk.

PowerPC Processors

If you have a PowerPC processor you won't be able to upgrade MacOS X. For most people the best option will be to switch to a newer computer. There is some cost involved with that so we've included some other options:

Option 1: Switch to a Mac with an Intel processor

Although getting a newer computer can involve significant cost, a newer Mac will provide a much better experience and allow you to keep Firefox and Mac OS X updated and secure.

Option 2: Switch to the TenFourFox web browser

If you can't upgrade Mac OS X, you can switch to the latest version of the TenFourFox web browser.
